Tree
Stump Gravestones are
unique funerary monuments found in cemeteries throughout the United
States and Europe. These gravestones were prevalent during the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries.
A
tree stump gravestone is rustic in nature and puts emphasis on representing
the gravestone as a tree or a portion of a tree in its natural state.
Most tree stump gravestones are carved out of limestone or marble,
with a few carved out of granite and sandstone.
In
Indiana, these lifelike tree forms (with elements of symbolism) are
found dating from 1850 through 1930.
