Clerk III - Branch Supervisor/Fish Lake Branch
Wage Range Starts At: $10.00 per hour - 27 hours per week

Performs specialized and non-specialized tasks during the daily operations of a branch library, under the supervision of others, using acquired skills and abilities, and exercising some degree of professional judgement.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(including, but not limited to the following)


    Duties and Responsibilities (not all inclusive)

  1. Daily operations of the branch during scheduled hours, including opening and closing of the branch.
  2. Circulation duties:
    1. Check materials in and out
    2. Register borrowers
    3. Provide general assistance to patrons
    4. Collect fines
    5. Maintain statistics as required
    6. Check in newspapers and magazines
    7. Shelves materials
    8. Maintain collection, manually and through automated system (changing material codes, changing loan periods, etc.)
    9. Keep up to date with automated system through training, etc.
  3. Patron Duties:
    1. Answer telephone
    2. Assist patrons at the desk
    3. Answer reference and directional questions using both print and electronic resources; referring patrons to main library for in-dept reference needs
    4. Assist patrons in locating print, AV, and electronic resources
    5. Assist patrons with online catalog
    6. Take/fill patrons requests/reserves
    7. Take patron suggestions for purchase
    8. Instruct and assist patrons in the use of PC’s, photocopier, Internet, and electronic resources
    9. Remind patrons of proper behavior as necessary
    10. Handle patron problems and complaints as necessary
    11. Consistently promote library services and programs to patrons
  4. Programming:
    1. Provide early childhood story hours
    2. Assist with Summer Reading Programs, including providing programs
    3. Offer children's, young adult, and adult programs when need or interest is shown by patrons
    4. Assist in development of programs for all ages
  5. Marketing/Promotion:
    1. Promote programs and services through displays, fliers, public speaking, etc.
    2. Act as library representative to branch community through local groups and by making school visits, etc
  6. Collection Development:
    1. Recommend materials to be purchased for the branch
    2. Weed collections regularly under supervision of and guidelines from the Extension Department supervisors
  7. Supervision:
    1. Supervise shelving and shelf reading of branch staff
    2. Assist in hiring branch page
    3. Train, schedule, assign work, and deliver performance reviews for branch staff
  8. Other Duties:
    1. Request and disburse supplies
    2. Maintain the circulation area and workroom in an orderly manner
    3. Forward materials to other departments and branches
    4. Assist with various duties related to rotating Branch collections
    5. Attend library meetings and in-service training programs
    6. Serve on library committees as assigned
    7. Report problems with cleaning or maintenance services or building problems to supervisor
    8. Performs light housekeeping as needed
    9. Clean materials as needed
    10. Other miscellaneous duties as assigned
  9. Cooperate with all staff in performing tasks essential to providing quality customer service and the achievement of library objectives, goals, and mission

Knowledge, Critical Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to handles mathematical computations quickly and accurately
  2. Ability to communicate effectively with patrons and fellow library employees, both verbally and in writing
  3. Ability to accurately organize materials alphabetically and numerically
  4. Ability to use the keyboard for automated systems
  5. Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with the public and with other staff members
  6. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as assigned
  7. Ability to type accurately and with moderate or average speed
  8. Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time (1 or more hours)
  9. Ability and willingness to learn to effectively use the automated system
  10. Ability and willingness to learn to effectively use PC equipment and electronic resources
  11. Ability and willingness to become familiar with library services, programs, materials, and routines
  12. Ability and willingness to learn library policies, procedures, routines, and duties and the ability to interpret these in a responsible manner
  13. Ability to perform specialized tasks which employ independent judgement, maturity and initiative in assigned areas
  14. Ability to maintain composure under stress

Other Skills and Abilities


  1. Knowledge of, or experience with, library routines, procedures, and duties; library experience preferred
  2. Attend library meetings and workshops, accepting training as needed or required
  3. The employee must be familiar with, or able to learn to function with, the following equipment in order to perform job functions:
    1. Library automated system and on-line catalog
    2. PC equipment
    3. Calculator
    4. FAX Machine
    5. Photocopier
    6. Telephone system
    7. Typewriter

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; smell. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; climb; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch,o or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. The employee must be able to perceive, initiate, or respond to fire alarms, warning sirens, and telephone system all-call messages in a calm, rational manner, making sure that the other employees and patrons are safe and out of the building.


Work Environment


While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to room temperature changes. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
